Why HerX?
Both holistic and conventional medical professions recognize the possibility of uncomfortable physiological reactions during treatment of spirochete infections (syphilis and Lyme disease), co-infections or yeast overgrowth. A Herxheimer (formally called “Jarisch-Herxheimer”), or die-off reaction, may occur with both herbal antimicrobials and conventional antibiotics. The physiological mechanisms of a Herxheimer reaction are not fully understood. However, it is believed to be an acute inflammatory response. When bacteria or yeast die they release a variety of toxins, proteins, antigens, cell particles and oxidizing agents that may provoke increased production of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and interleukin-8.
Since many Lyme disease symptoms are the result of excess inflammatory cytokines, an acute inflammatory Herxheimer reaction manifests as a temporary worsening of Lyme symptoms that begins 24-48 hours after the initiation of antibiotic treatment. Treatment of fungal colonization will almost invariably result in a Herxheimer reaction in a hypersensitive patient if the treatment is too aggressive.
